Keeping Your Dog Happy and Healthy During Winter

As the cooler months roll in across Australia, it's important to remember that our dogs feel the chill too! While some breeds love the brisk air, others might struggle with the drop in temperature. No matter what size or breed your dog is, a little extra care can go a long way in keeping them happy, healthy, and comfortable this winter.

Here are some simple tips to help your best mate through the season:

1. Keep Them Warm

Just like us, dogs can feel the cold — especially smaller breeds, older dogs, or those with short coats. Consider:

  • Dog jackets or jumpers for those chilly morning walks

  • Extra bedding, like a cosy blanket or raised bed to keep them off cold floors

  • Sheltered spaces if they spend time outside, making sure they have protection from the wind and rain

2. Adjust Exercise Routines

Winter days can be shorter and wetter, but regular exercise is still a must!

  • Pick the warmest part of the day for walks (late morning or early afternoon)

  • Shorten outdoor time if it’s raining or freezing, and try some indoor games like tug-of-war or treat puzzles to keep their mind active

  • Watch for stiff joints — colder weather can make arthritis flare up, so chat to your vet if you notice any limping or reluctance to move

3. Watch Their Diet

With less movement in winter, some dogs can gain weight. Others might need more calories to keep warm.

  • Monitor their body condition and adjust their food intake if needed

  • Stick to a routine — keeping feeding times consistent helps their digestion and energy levels

  • Always provide plenty of fresh water — heaters can dry out the air and your dog's hydration needs might increase!

4. Grooming Is Still Important

Even in winter, grooming matters!

  • Regular brushing keeps their coat healthy and removes loose fur

  • Avoid frequent baths unless necessary, as it can dry out their skin

  • Check paws for any cracks or dryness, especially if walking on cold or wet surfaces

5. Safety First

  • Be careful with heaters and fireplaces — dogs can accidentally burn themselves

  • Visibility gear like reflective collars or leads can help if you're walking when it's darker

  • Watch out for toxic winter plants or mushrooms during outdoor adventures

6. Extra Cuddles Are a Must

Winter is the perfect excuse for more couch snuggles and cosy nights with your furry friend. 🐶❤️

Remember: Every dog is different! Some love the cold and will zoom around like crazy, while others prefer to be tucked up inside until spring. Pay attention to their needs and comfort, and you'll both enjoy the season together.
