Vet visits can be stressful for dogs and owners. But with a few simple strategies, you can make appointments calmer and even help your dog enjoy them.

1. Start with Short, Positive Visits
Take your dog to the vet just to say hello or get a small treat, without any procedures. This helps them associate the clinic with positive experiences.
2. Practice Handling at Home
Gently touch paws, ears, mouth, and tail at home, paired with treats and praise. This gets your dog used to being examined, so the vet visit feels less scary.
3. Bring Comfort Items
A favourite blanket, toy, or treat can make the experience feel more familiar. Some dogs also respond well to calming sprays or pheromones.
4. Use Calm Energy
Dogs pick up on our stress. Speak softly, move slowly, and reward calm behaviour. Avoid forcing your dog, instead, let them move at their own pace where possible.
5. Plan for Rewards Afterwards
Have a fun treat, walk, or playtime ready for after the visit. This reinforces that leaving the vet is worth it, even if the visit itself is a little scary.
Vet visits are easier with patience, preparation, and positive associations. For dogs who struggle more, one-on-one training can help them feel safe, confident, and calm.
